These DIY Wakeup Shower Melts are the best way to wake up full of energy naturally. They are quick, easy to make and will leave you refreshed for the day ahead.
Do you find it hard to sneak a few minutes of a pampering bath into your errand-filled daily routine?
You’re not alone.
When I first had my two kids, I discovered that the closest thing to experiencing a spa treatment during a busy week is having fifteen minutes of uninterrupted shower.
But motherhood shouldn’t keep us from enjoying some “me-time” once in a while.
I’ll show you how shower melts can solve your dilemmas.
What Are Shower Melts, Shower Steamers, Shower Bombs, Shower Soothers, And Shower Fizzies?
They may come in a variety of names but shower melts, shower steamers, shower bombs, shower soothers and shower fizzies all refer to the molded mixture of baking soda and essential oils that dissolves in the shower and gives off an aromatic scent.
You must be familiar with bath bombs already—those balls that fizz in the tub and create swirls of glittery colors. If so, just imagine them in the form of tablets or half-spheres that you can leave on the corner of the shower stall while you take a rinse under the spray.
These “melts” literally melt in the shower due to steam and water, which turn into a scent that wafts all over the stall to give you a relaxing, spa-like experience.
6 Benefits Of Shower Melts
While the primary benefit of shower melts lies in its therapeutic aroma, it has numerous benefits that promote improved health and wellbeing. Among them are as follows:
1) Shower Melts Make You Feel Energized
The reason why I encourage you to try shower melts in the morning is so that you can start feeling ready to tackle your daily tasks right after waking up.
They stimulate your brain through your nose’s smell receptors, making you stay alert and have a clear presence of mind.
Depending on the essential oils used in your shower fizzies, the effect on your brain can be stimulating or calming, both of which can help you stay stress-free the whole day.
Studies have shown that the neuro messengers in the limbic and hypothalamus cause the mind and body to work in sync positively.
2) Shower Melts Help In Uplifting Your Mood
If you’re feeling sluggish or uninspired to start the day, you can have an aromatherapy session in the shower using shower melts to turn your mood around.
Researchers have found that the olfactory aromatherapy is effective in enhancing mood and emotion through simple inhalation of pleasurable scents.
Lemon, for instance, is a stimulant that sends messages to the brain to release serotonin and other mood-enhancing hormones that can help ease even depression.
3) Shower Melts Calm Your Nerves
It’s somewhat agitating to go through all the worries of everyday mom duties, which is why I recommend you use shower melts to calm your nerves even before setting out to do your tasks.
These shower fizzies help reduce stress hormones which can help you prevent anxiety and toxic worrying.
If done regularly, you can say goodbye to the unnecessary stress caused by everyday concerns and stay calm throughout the day.
4) Shower Melts Help Prevent Insomnia
Aside from calming your nerves during the day, shower melts can also be used at night before bedtime to help ease your mind and make you sleep peacefully without tossing and turning under the sheets.
You can forget about sleeping pills for a while and turn to aromatic shower fizzies for a night of safe and sound sleep.
5) Shower Melts Aid In Body Relief
Some hospitals and medical facilities have been complementing cancer treatments with aromatherapy to help improve the wellbeing of the patients.
One cancer research institute believes that aromatherapy can help in improving the symptoms of cancer such as discomfort, nausea, and fatigue.
Patients who have limited bathroom space can have aromatherapy in the shower by using shower fizzies instead, either standing or while seated on a bench.
6) Shower Melts Help Ease Sinusitis and Clogged Nose
Aromatherapy also aids in improving your respiratory health through inhalation of essential oils during bath with the use of shower melts.
In particular, eucalyptus and peppermint are commonly used to de-clog the airways of mucus, thereby helping you breathe with ease and cure your colds with the aromatic steam.
How To Make DIY Shower Melts Without Citric Acid Or Cornstarch
Even without including the more expensive ingredients such as citric acid and cornstarch, you can make a batch of DIY shower melts by using the remaining key ingredients such as baking powder, water, and essential oils. Simply add a little water at a time to the baking soda-oil mixture and press it down in silicon molds. Place the molds on a baking sheet and put it in the oven for 20 minutes or more until the tablets harden.
Citric acid is what makes the mixture fizz upon contact with water, and you can absolutely do without the fizz because shower melts are meant to diffuse smell and not interact with your skin.
Same thing with cornstarch; it is the binding agent in most bath bombs but you don’t need much of it for the shower so you can skip adding this ingredient. It will also prevent the shower melts from taking too long to diffuse the scent.
Because my recipe uses the oven for drying and hardening the shower melts, you won’t need to add cornstarch to hold together the mixture.
How To Use Shower Melts
To use shower melts, simply place a tablet on the corner of the shower stall and let it sit there as you rinse. Make sure the water isn’t drenching the tablet or it will dissolve completely before you’re even finished showering. It will only need a little water and steam for the tablet to diffuse the aromatic oils.
Be careful that your feet don’t touch the tablet to avoid slipping on it.
You can also place it on a shower bench for safety and to slow down the melting of the tablet.
FAQs
How To Keep Shower Melts From Crumbling
To prevent shower melts from crumbling while you make them, add enough essential oils and water into the mixture to keep it moist and not dry. It also helps to press it down firmly into the cavities of the molds before drying.
Can You Use Shower Melts In The Bath?
You can use shower melts in the bathtub, but it’s not advisable if you have skin allergies. Shower melts usually have essential oils that are concentrated, and certain brands of essential oils your skin irritate upon soaking too long. Besides, shower melts are meant to diffuse smell instead of coming in contact with your body.
Certain brands of essential oils are healthy for the skin, but you have to be careful to use mild essential oils to avoid skin irritation.
Best Silicone Molds For Shower Melts
You can find a few brands selling the best silicone molds for shower melts and they usually come in a variety of shapes. I recommend that you look for molds that do not stick to the mixture during the drying process and are sturdy enough to hold them together. If you’re going to gift some fizzies to friends, you have the option to buy a silicone tray having different shapes of mold for novelty.
I love these silicone molds for shower melts.
Can You Store Shower Melts In The Freezer?
It’s okay to store shower melts in the freezer. However, you should only take them out prior to use to avoid room temperature from affecting the consistency of the hardened mixture and make it expand prematurely. Take each shower melt from the mold and wrap it individually with clear plastic before freezing.
How To Store Shower Melts
You should store shower melts in a cool, dry place. Avoid placing them in sun-lit areas to avoid moisture from touching their surface. Alternatively, you can put them inside air-tight containers away from heat and light.
How To Package Shower Melts
Whether you’re going to store the shower melts at home for later use or give them away to friends, you can make a presentable packaging for these fizzies. Wrap them individually in clear plastic and stack them up inside a clear jar with tight lid. Label the jar with the name of the essential oil used to avoid confusion and unnecessary opening just to check the smell, especially if you’ve made batches using different oils. Bonus: you can add a silica packet so it can absorb moisture inside the jar.
Where Can I Get Labels For Shower Melts
Pinterest is a good source for label templates you can use for your shower melts. But if you want them customized for you, you can search for wholesale sticker label merchants online so they can make a batch according to your instructions. There are also some ready-made labels using generic names of shower melts available online.
How Long Do Shower Melts Last?
A perfectly-made batch of shower melts can last up to 6 months if stored properly. A tablet of shower melt will usually dissolve in the shower just long enough to provide up to 30 minutes of showering.
