The Difference Between Self Tanner, Spray Tans & Tanning Oil
They may all have “tan” in their names, but the similarity between a self-tanner, a spray tan, and tanning oil begins and ends with the ability to make your skin look golden brown.
These 3 tanning products each have their own ways of how you can achieve tan lines.
Tanning Oil
Let’s start with the most common way to get a tanned complexion: by staying under the sun.
For this method, you will need tanning oil to protect your skin from damage while you sunbathe.
So basically, the browning effect is still provided by UV rays, which the product helps absorb in an accelerated manner through increasing the production and absorption of melanin.
This is a great natural tanning oil containing no harmful chemicals.
Spray Tans
As for spray tans, you simply let someone—a professional at that—spray a tanning mist on your skin for a temporary bronzing effect. And by temporary, I mean you can wash it off under the shower and simply reapply as needed.
Such is also the mechanism in self-tanners.
Both spray tans and self-tanners are commonly referred to as “sunless tanners” because you don’t need to sunbathe in order to get your tan. In other words, they give you a “fake” instead of actually “baked” complexion.
Self Tanner
As the term suggests, a self-tanner is a product that you can use on your own—meaning, you simply apply it all over your skin yourself and even at home.
Still, while most of these “sunless tanners” only add color to the outer layer of your skin, some spray tans can penetrate deeper and thus change your complexion in the long term.

How Long Does Self Tanner Last?
On average, a good-quality self tanner can last for about 5 days to one week, provided you let it set for 7-8 hours after application. This makes the self tanner stay on for longer.
How Often Should I Apply Self Tanner?
While there’s no harm in applying a self tanner on a daily basis, you’ll want to limit reapplications to twice or thrice a week for color maintenance as well as to avoid over-application that causes uneven pigmentation.
How Long To Leave A Fake Tan On Before Showering
For optimal results, it is recommended to let the fake tan set on your skin for about 4-8 hours after application.
By doing so, you’ll avoid ruining your work when you jump into the shower to rinse.
How Long Does Self Tanner Take To Dry
Drying time for self tanners usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the concentration of the formula on certain areas. Within this period, you should avoid getting dressed at once to prevent fabric staining and ruining the skin application.
How To Dry Fake Tanner Quickly
You can speed up the drying process of your fake tanner by using a blow dryer that has been set at low.
Be careful not to expose the skin to more than 5 minutes of blow drying to prevent it from getting burned and damaged.
How To Remove Self Tanner
Depending on the kind of self tanner that you used, you may need to exfoliate with a body scrub or simply run water over the tanned areas.
Bronzers are makeup-based self tanners that easily wash off with water, while more concentrated formulations of self tanner will need a few scrubbings to exfoliate tanned skin cells.
You can also use lemon or lime juice to help speed up tan removal.

How To Layer Self Tanner
You can achieve an even tan by applying self tanner in layers. Wait for 20-30 minutes for the first layer to dry before applying the next layer. Keep on layering your tan until you achieve your desired shade.
Can You Still Tan With Self Tanner On?
Yes, you can still tan while still wearing your self tanner. Whether you’re aiming for a sunbathed glow or to simply achieve a darker brown complexion, you can tan under the sun and even add a new layer to your already-self-tanned skin.
7 DIY Self Tanner Recipes: Instant Natural Glowing Fake Tan
Recipes 1-5 are temporary self tanner recipes. You simply massage the mixture into the skin and the color change will be immediate. Avoid contact with water. These self tanners can be easily washed off in the shower.
Recipes 6 and 7 are longer lasting self tanner recipes. It will take up to 1 day for the final color to develop. Water won't wash off these self tanner recipes so you have to wait until they fade naturally.
Cocoa powder has a high pigmentation quality, which is why it can be a good base ingredient for a DIY self tanner. Here’s how you can make one. Coffee, just like all caffeine-based beverages, has a high concentration of tannins, which easily and almost permanently stain the teeth.
